THCS/SRCF LAN party, Easter 2008
The (termly?) THCS/SRCF LAN party is happening on Saturday 14th June in the Graham Storey Room, Trinity Hall, from 10am until whenever we decide to go for dinner.
How to find
Official map (you want Central Site)
- Note that you can't drive to college between 10am and 4pm, and no parking is available on site (although there is somewhere you can stop briefly to drop off). If you want to drive your PC there, you should do so before 10am and then take your car elsewhere (e.g. to the Park Street multistorey car park). Malcolm and others should be around setting things up from soon after 9am.
To find the Graham Storey Room, see the Central Site map (PDF) -- you want to follow the dotted route to location X. (Note that the map is out of date, and the main entrance is back where it always used to be, to the right of the "Main Entrance" label as opposed to where the arrow points to.) N.B.: don't use the GSR's new entrance facing Hall / the Fellows' Garden. Go round the back as shown on the map.

Bring
Important things to remember include:
- Yourself
- PC (with 100base-TX or 1000base-T ethernet socket), monitor, keyboard, mouse, mousemat, power cables, etc.
- (Unless you've booked a loan PC.)
- Gaming will occur only over the wired network. The Trinity Hall wireless network may be available to people with the necessary account, but do not expect to be able to play games wirelessly.
Expect there to be room for one monitor only. We might be able to accommodate two smallish monitors but don't count on it. The room is likely to be full.
- Headphones (no speakers please!)
- Optionally, a microphone (or headset) -- there is talk of using Teamspeak
Don't bring an ethernet cable -- we'll be providing them and don't want to mix up ours with yours
But note that each person gets one ethernet cable. Don't bring a second computer. If you really have to, tell Malcolm as soon as possible so he can make sure you're sat where there's spare switch capacity.
Don't bring a 4-way (or more) mains adapter -- only adapters installed by Malcolm or Rob are allowed
- Game CDs -- preinstalled on your PC
- Lunch (or plan to buy some when there) -- we'll provide snacks and drinks, but not a meal
- Money to drop in a donation box to cover snacks you consume (if you don't, the SRCF will be reluctant to organise this again!) -- also if you enjoy the day please donate more to show your appreciation (all proceeds to the SRCF)
Caution
The Graham Storey Room has antique, irreplacable carpets and a few old manuscripts in glass cases (as well as the more conventional conference room equipment such as a digital projector and sound system). Be careful. You will be held responsible and charged for any damage you cause. This is likely to be very expensive. Don't spill drinks, don't place things on glass cabinets, don't gaffer tape your cables to the carpets, don't touch the projector or sound system without permission, etc...
Dinner
There will be some sort of meal afterwards, possibly at Chilis. We can finalise this on the day and book a few hours in advance.
PCs
You should bring your own PC if at all possible, and headphones. (Power sockets and gigabit internal network / 100 Megabit internet link will be provided.)
A few computers will be available for loan to people who can't bring their own. These are the college-owned loan PCs (3.4GHz HT P4, 0.5-1GB RAM, but the graphics cards aren't great -- Intel Graphics Accelerator 950). There are also a couple of better graphics cards of various spec to fit them, or bring your own low-profile PCI-E card.
Alternatively you may loan just a monitor for use with your own PC (17" Dell TFT, analogue VGA input only).
Important conditions for loaning college-owned hardware:
- You must apply in advance, by 12th June.
- You must fill out paperwork on the day to say you've accepted our terms and take responsibility for damage to the hardware.
- The loan costs you GBP 1 for the day.
You must hand in a deposit cheque (GBP 300 for a PC with monitor and assorted peripherals, or GBP 150 for just a monitor); this will only be cashed if the hardware is damaged. You must therefore bring a cheque book.
If you do not have a chequebook you must bring a photo ID and a photocopy of your photo ID. You'll need to sign a form accepting responsibility for full replacement costs of the loan equipment if it is damaged.
If you want to put your name down for a PC and/or a monitor, do so here, and remember that you'll only actually get one if you comply with the above conditions. First come, first served.
- Neill - Monitor or two if possible
- Ian - PC + Monitor
- Malte - Monitor would be useful, bringing laptop
- Rob M - PC and monitor please
- Felix - monitor
- Carrie - monitor
- TC - needs PC, might bring monitor
- Kristian - PC + Monitor please (though if there're insufficient PCs, I can possibly acquire a laptop for myself)
- Alexander Atkins (Beetle) - PC + monitor
