Minutes of the THCS meeting - 19/01/2003

Ratification of minutes from last meeting
The minutes of the previous meeting were ratified

Report on publicity
There was a report on publicity - none as yet. Posters around college were suggested. In time for the next event?

Bank account progress report
The was a financial report - budget £15 for non-hal.
Bank account has been applied for, waiting for the response from Barclays.
Currently the signatories are nrs27 and pjm80, only one to get money out, but the current (unofficial policy) is to discuss it between them. also the jcr signatories can do in an emergency. There was a suggestion that for all money earned by members of the CSG, a percentage is contributed to thcs.

Discussion on management of paper records
The JCR requires paper copies of minutes etc. Suggested we acquire a box file type thing, and use it for all thcs paperwork. And brought to all meetings. Money for the file from the £15 admin fund?

Discussion on the hard drive situation on hal
One of the hard drive in hal died hoprribly a week before we returned to cambridge. One of the srcf admins was asked to temporarily fix hal so it at least functioned. When the admins returned full diagnotics were run, and it seemed to pass fine. Since then it seems to have been running fine. Options are a new harddrive, returning to IBM for replacement, or carrying on with perhaps an extra fan. 1 is expensive, 2 requires error codes which it's not currently generating. 3 seems to viable option, plus installing a fan. Or a real hard drive cooler, which could be expensive. nrs27 wil investigate prices.
Software on hal - generally ok, iptables logging strange.
Currently no swap on hal - at the moment ok, until someone uses all the ram... Suggestions include installing another small hard drive for swap only, put a swap file over nfs on csg, or a swap file on hal's raid array. Third option seems the sanest...

Should staff members have accounts?
Staff members meaning: Fellows, COs.
Propose that the constitution is amended to be clearer on this case:
All members of the JCR and MCR, other permitted users of the CUDN at the discretions of the administrators.

Suggestions for what to do with lah
A mac server was acquired by the soc. What to call it? Suggestions: lah seems to be the consensus.
PowerPc, 120 MHz, 32MB. Currently running debian stable (sort of).
Suggestions for new scsi disks, as currently only 2gb in there. ejs50 has perhaps a 4+ gig drive,
RAM - uses a very weird sort, so hard to acquire cheaply. Thus won't get more unless it appears.
Suggestions for OS Suggestions for use Decided on linux. Distro? Debian, gentoo, mandrake, yellow dog, et al.
Perhaps SE linux on debian...
Suggestions for training new admins without breaking hal...
Leaving as debian, further suggestion left for next meeting.

Suggestions for another event in the near future
Pubmeet? Predictable, no funding...
Talk? With £15?
Pubmeet... perhaps with JCN?
May week bbq? - delegated to ejs50
AGM? TBD.
5pm happy hour in comp lab, then curry. Friday 24th Jan.

AOB
Switches for the college network. Arriving on tuesday 21st, BBC, Wychfield etc get them first. Suggestions on using NAT to control the switches, with csg. Or give them an ip address.
Policy for graduating student's accts.... ask college for list of graduating members, grep for ppl with accts. Delete ones that won't be permitted cudn access' accts over the summer.
THCS trademark dilution - TH Cheerleading Squad. :)
Need a disaster recovery system for hal...
-we will endeavour to form an elite special forces team to take over the SRCF earth evacuation ship in the event of the imminent destruction of earth.
No small furry creatures from alpha centauri are allowed to be members of the society unless they are members of the university.
